We mustn’t despair. I know, I know – it is easy for me to say. I am spending the winter in Florida , away from the debilitating winter weather conditions and frequent power outages. I wasn’t housebound and forced to hibernate and seek ways to keep warm. However I am an empathetic person who has family and friends in the north who I love and worry about. But spring WILL come, the snow will melt, the flowers will bloom, and the birds will sing. Summer will be hot and enjoyed by most.  In autumn a record number of babies will be born {you do the math} and life will go on.

  1. In northern California we had the opposite problem. Our winter rains would not come (the driest year since record keeping began). Many flowers were confused by the sunshine and started flowering in January and February only to be bitten by frosts. Governor Brown declared a water “emergency” and plans for rationing. Finally we had modest rains starting about 10 days ago and the daffodils and prunus trees burst into bloom, the brown hillsides are turning green. It would have to rain for another 4-5 weeks to bulk up the snow pack we rely on to fill the reservoirs, but hey we’ re grateful for what we can get.
To the rest of the northern hemisphere – stay warm, spring is coming!
